Dental bridges are dental prosthetics that do precisely what their name implies – they bridge a gap in the teeth. The bridge is made up of two or more crowns that are fitted onto the abutment teeth on either side of the gap and the false tooth/teeth fit in between. At Colony Dental, you can find quality dental bridges to restore your smile in Sugar Land.
Benefits of dental bridges
In addition to effectively restoring the appearance of your smile, dental bridges allow you to speak and chew food comfortably again. Tooth loss can cause bone recession in the jaw, which could eventually lead to a change in your face shape. Dental bridges help to maintain the shape of your face, preventing premature aging. Additionally, dental bridges help distribute chewing forces more evenly on the teeth and prevent the remaining teeth from changing positions on the gum line.
There are several types of bridges available. The type selected will depend on the location of the gap in the teeth. Most commonly, the gap will be neighbored by two natural teeth, so a traditional bridge can be used. Your dentist will discuss your options with you to select the most appropriate type before your procedure.
At least two appointments will be needed to place a bridge. The abutment teeth must first be prepared during your first visit to our office in Sugar Land. This consists of having the teeth shaved down a small portion to get them ready to receive a dental crown. Your dentist will then take an impression of the prepared teeth to send to a dental laboratory where the bridge will be made. At the end of this visit, a temporary bridge will be placed on the prepared teeth to keep them and the exposed gums protected until your next visit.
Once the dental bridge has been completed, you will return to Colony Dental to have the temporary bridge removed and to have the fit of the permanent bridge checked. Your dentist will make adjustments as necessary in order to achieve the perfect fit; multiple visits may be necessary. Once the fit has been achieved, the bridge will be cemented into place.
