Common Dental Emergencies

In order to help you determine if your condition constitutes an emergency we’ve compiled a short list of some common emergencies we see patients for. This list in not exhaustive. Please call (281) 565-4100  to have a staff member help you determine if what you’re experiencing is an emergency.

Items lodged in teeth

Be it food or a toothpick or anything else that might make its way into the mouth, when something is lodged in between your teeth, you should not try to remove it yourself. A pesky popcorn kernel that comes right out is fine, but if there is something stuck between your teeth that won’t come out, call Colony Dental immediately.

Knocked out/loose teeth

Having a tooth loosened or knocked out of its socket is a dental emergency. Chances are high that if you still have the tooth or it remains in the socket, your natural tooth can be saved. Follow these four steps to help increase the chances of saving your tooth:

  1. Rinse your mouth of any debris with a warm saline solution and try to stop any bleeding.
  2. If you have the tooth, remove any debris, and try to ensure the root stays intact.
  3. If tooth and mouth are clear of debris, you can attempt to place tooth back into its socket.
  4. If you cannot place tooth in its socket, place it in a glass of milk and bring it with you to your emergency appointment.

Dental infections

Dental infections are one of the most common emergencies we see. If your minor toothache suddenly become unbearable, you notice pus, swelling, a foul odor, bad taste, or become feverish you may be suffering from a dental infection—this is an emergency. These are serious medical conditions, and if left untreated, the infections can spread to other tissues. Ice packs and over the counter pain medicine can be useful in reducing inflammation and pain until you can be seen by Dr. Hassan.

Root canals

When you’re in pain and you need a root canal, it’s stressful. We totally get it, and we understand that you need care, compassion, and expert dental treatment. Though it may not seem like it, needing root canal therapy can be an emergency, and we are honored to be the ones to get you out of pain. A lot of people are concerned that root canals cause pain. However, your root canal treatment will take your pain away. If you need a root canal, don’t wait.

Chipped, fractured, or broken teeth

Do I need to go to the ER?

For the vast majority of dental emergencies there should be no need to visit the emergency room. They are typically not equipped to deal with dental pain and infections and will likely turn you away, costing you valuable time. You should visit the emergency room if:

  • You have damage to the bones of your face or jaw
  • You are experiencing profuse bleeding that will not stop
  • You have experienced trauma that poses risk to life or limb
